Safety in water and wastewater treatment facilities, as in any other field, demands knowledge about the source of hazards and control to the greatest possible extent of them. Wastewater and water treatment facilities can benefit from improvements in LED technology, controlling hazards, reducing energy usage, and maintenance costs. Explosions are one of the most important types of hazards in wastewater and water treatment plants and they are really unpredictable. Explosion-proof lights prevent the propagation of an internal explosion to the atmosphere allowing the gases to escape only after the gas has traveled and cooled down within the fixture.

Knowing the sources of these hazards and the incorporation of safety measures, like an appropriate explosion proof lighting system, is essential to proper safe operation and prevention of accidents in the facilities. There are institutions like the International Electro-Technical Commission (IEC) and the National Electrical Code (NEC) in the United States that regulate the use of electrical systems. NEC requirements make reference to listed or label devices and lighting systems are listed under the UL organization.

Several water and wastewater plants have converted their lighting to LED to ensure the facility is providing adequate and reliable lighting. In NJZ Lighting, we create explosion-proof lights in compliance with the most important factors to meet the expectations. They can be used in locations with the presence of flammable vapors and gases as well as combustible dusts (by NEC and IEC standards- UL 844 listed). Our fixtures operate within their thermal limits which can be used in locations where the atmosphere needs temperatures from 200 °C to 85°C to ignite (T3-T6 rating). They are also listed under the ASTM B117 standard for outdoor locations with salt and spray 1000 hours corrosion test. Another consideration is how the light sources can truly project an object’s real color like color label pipes in a wastewater plant. NJZ fixtures technology allows this with a CRI (color rendering index) of 70. Due to the presence of hazardous chemicals in wastewater and water treatment plants, fixtures can easily depreciate over time, so it is really important that lighting products offer durability to the exposure while delivering the required lighting space. Our luminaires that are applicable for wastewater and water treatment plants range from 50,000 to 100,000 hours as a guaranty of their performance.

Wastewater and water treatment facilities operate under stringent safety regulations and need a lighting system that provides optimized visibility and visual comfort to promote a safe work environment that can increase productivity. Nowadays, it is essential to invest in a properly designed LED luminaire that can provide a safe environment, reduce your energy costs at the same time that delivers highly efficient performance. Some of our industrial LED explosion-proof luminaires applicable for wastewater treatment facilities are Defender FEL-C, Ranger FEL-E, Warrior FEL-D, and Hammer FEL-H. NJZ Lighting has proved experiences with wastewater treatment installations and can provide references regarding usage and requirements.
